Rotary Gives Thanks” is held annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving and is a day in which Rotary Clubs in Hawaii perform a service project to benefit the local community. This year, The Rotary Club of Honolulu improved the Child & Family Service’s home of “Ka Pa Ola.” This is a Teen Living Care program providing stability and a safe living environment, intensive support, skills training, counseling and clinical services for youth ages 12 to 17 who are unable to live with their natural families.

The Rotary Club of Honolulu provided almost $7700 in funding for the painting of the home’s exterior and Rotary Club of Honolulu members and their families gave their time on Saturday, November 18th to complete the painting, furnish and assemble lanai furniture, and landscape the backyard to provide a pleasant environment for the youth residents of Ka Pa Ola. Professionals painted the entire exterior of the home taking it from yellow and red to a warm and inviting taupe and cream.

On Saturday, over 20 Rotarians, friends & families joined together to complete the final painting and transform the back area from dirt and concrete to a beautifully landscaped courtyard for the girls to enjoy the outdoors. It was an unbelievable day in which 6 teenage residents of Ka Pa Ola joined Rotarians in the painting of the fence and the landscaping. The day closed with a maile lei ceremony with Child and Family Service President & CEO Howard Garval, Director of Properties Diane Reece, Director of Program Services BH Patti Johnson, and Program Director Theresa Tevaga joining the Rotary Club of Honolulu volunteers and Ka Pa Ola residents. A wonderful cake saying “Mahalo Honolulu Rotary Club” along with handwoven leis made by the girls for every volunteer ended the day with smiles and laughter.

Special mahalo to Rotarian Claude Thompson for volunteering his company, Akamai Painting, Inc. to perform the painting at cost and Akamai’s General Manager Luis Fernandez for overseeing the project. Also to Kai Wainee of Laulima Designs, Inc. for donating his time to create landscaping designs and share his knowledge of plants and materials.

The Rotary club of Hanalei Bay dedicated the Hanalei Ocean Safety Storage Building on Wednesday, Oct. 25th.  This is the largest project ever undertaken by the Club and was built with donations from Rotarians, Kauai County, the community and in-kind contributions from local businesses.  Several work days were held with members caulking and painting in order to finish the construction.

Northshore Kauai lifeguards had to store their equipment outside at the Princeville Fire Station before this building was completed.  Occasionally, the highway to Hanalei floods and becomes impassable so the lifeguards couldn’t get their equipment to the beaches until the road reopens.  This building lets them have the equipment closer the beaches and improves water safety on Kauai’s Northshore beaches.  Dignitaries present included:  Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste, Fire Chief Bob Westerman, Lifeguard Supervisor Kalani Vierra and PDG Claude Thompson.

George Corrigan, Secretary

The Rotary Club of Hilo, chartered on December 5, 1920, continues its tradition of service by maintaining the pavilion located at the soccer fields on Kamehameha Avenue.  The facility was created by the Hilo Rotary Club Foundation and the AYSO 274 and dedicated to the County of Hawaii in September 2002.

The Rotary Club of Hilo is pleased to submit a photo and release about the recent awards to two outstanding members of the charter school community.

Kihei Wailea's Dictionary Project

Barbara Kenrich did an outstanding job of coordinating this project.  With her private pilot providing free airfare, in one day, we went to three different Molokai elementary schools and then to Lanai where our very own Rotarian Sue Murray picked us up and we delivered dictionaries to two more third grade classes.

These photos are in order of flights--Maui to Molokai, Molokai to Lanai, and Lanai to Maui.
