HAWAII ROTARY YOUTH FOUNDATION

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

The Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation (HRYF) was founded in 1976 by Maurice J. "Sully" Sullivan.  Sully's vision was to "Invest in Hawaii's Future" by assisting Hawaii's high school seniors in realizing their potential by providing financial support to attend the college of their choice in Hawaii or on the mainland.

The first college scholarship was granted in 1977 and this first scholarship established the guidelines for non-transferable, one-time grants that are a true gift and not to be repaid.

The HRYF is a non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the State of Hawaii and all programs are funded by contributions from Rotarians, community minded individuals and foundations. The generous Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation endowment grant of $1,000,000 has created tremendous opportunities for the deserving students of the islands.

In 2008, 72 scholarship grants for a total of $346,000 were awarded to deserving Hawaii high school seniors to assist in their college educations.

As of June 15, 2008; 1,274 scholarship grants with a total value of $4,182,263 have been awarded to Hawaii high school seniors since 1977.

HRYF scholarship grants range from $2,000 to $5,000 for each student recipient, depending on whether they select a mainland or Hawaii university.

Two prestigious scholarships are given to two "outstanding students" each year.  One is the

Maurice J. Sullivan Scholarship Award for $10,000 and the other is the Joanna Lau Sullivan Scholarship Award for $10,000 ($2,500 per year for 4 years).

HRYF scholarship selection criteria are based on scholastic and academic achievements, personal involvement in campus and community activities, employment experience and financial need.  Rotarians from District 5000 provide hundreds of hours of volunteer time in interviewing potential scholarship grant applicants and then recommending deserving high school seniors from the 43 statewide Rotary Clubs for the final selection process.

HRYF contributions are greatly appreciated and many Rotarians are Sully Fellows. In fact, the Rotary Club of Ala Moana was the very first 100% Sully Fellow Club in 2002-2003. Contributions can be designated to community colleges, vocational schools, specific year scholars, or funds with no specific designation are automatically placed in the endowment fund. HRYF, due to the generosity of Sully, maintains an office in the Foodland Building in Kaimuki. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 7:00-10:00am and you can call us at 735-1073 with any questions or comments you may have regarding HRYF contributions and scholarship grants.

On behalf of the Officers of HRYF, and our founder Sully Sullivan, thank you for your tremendous support over the years and for giving the gift of college to some of the finest and most deserving high school seniors in the islands. Please continue to help us support the educational Dreams of Hawaii's youth by donating to HRYF!
