ROTARY OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENGAGING STUDENTS IN 2010

Rotarians statewide were instrumental in establishing Kids Voting Hawaii as an innovative opportunity for enhancing the civic education of all students, k-12, in public and private schools. Rotarians were stationed at polling places, where students filled out their paper General Election ballots from 1996 - 2002.
Kids Voting Hawaii now offers the voting experience entirely online, so students can vote on virtually the same ballot their parents receive, when they go to the polls on election day. While students no longer go to polling sites to vote on abbreviated paper ballots, they experience democracy by voting online, anywhere there is an Internet connection. The KVH voting period coincides with the adult walk in' schedule. The results of the Kids Voting Hawaii General Election are announced in advance of the adult results. In the 2008 General Election, 119,756 students cast ballots.
The KVH General Election is password-protected. The one-student-one-vote passwords are distributed at school. This year, KVH also is offering a Mock Primary Election experience. No password will be required, and only the major races will be featured in the Mock Primary.
