A Message from Governor George

Aloha District 5000 Rotarians!

Two months have passed since the beginning of our Rotary year and what great start we have had!  After an extremely successful Back to School project as well as a host of other projects that have been completed by clubs throughout the district during the months of July and August, the momentum in the district continues to build.

Paige and I have completed 32 club visits and we are both thoroughly impressed by the dedication and commitment each club has shown in service projects, membership growth and retention, The Rotary Foundation, and in programs dedicated to serving Hawaii's youth.  Each Rotarian in District 5000 should be extremely proud of your club and what its leadership and members are accomplishing this year.

Our Rotary Foundation Chair, PDG Hal Darcey organized one of the best attended Foundation Seminar's ever this past Saturday (August 25th).  We had over 75 Rotarians attend this seminar!  Knowledge is the key to our success this year with our foundation.  My two areas of emphasis that I have asked each club president to consider are recognition and what I term "return on investment" - Making sure that every Rotarian knows how their dollar is being spent and what return they can expect by contributing to The Rotary Foundation.

District Family of Rotary  Chair, Audrey Wilson has available the Rotary Necrology (click here for the form.)  This is a comprehensive program for Rotarians that have passed away in your club including appropriate words to say during the service.  Please look for it once this program is put online under the Family of Rotary.  It has been used successfully during a recent service in Hilo with many positive comments from the family.  I believe this Necrology is a Rotary first and hopefully Audrey's efforts will be recognized internationally.

Paige and I hope you have a fun Labor Day weekend!  We resume our club visits on September 9th and look forward to seeing all of you soon!  Please remember to Share Rotary with everyone you encounter in your daily lives - love and compassion is the key!

Yours in Rotary,

George

With the help of several Rotary clubs on Maui, the Kahului Rotary Club completed their Weinberg Friends project for the second year in a row.  On Saturday, August 25th, nearly 55 Rotarians helped put a new face on the old building of the Central Maui Boys and Girls Club to make it match the new building right next door.  Rotarians also removed shelving, painted, cut window opening into a cement wall, painted, weed-wacked, and cleaned gutters, oh and did we mention paint?

Rotarian Bill Harper, R.C. of Kauai & buddies as his ship reached The Polar Ice Cap Aug 5,2007, less than 600 statue miles from the North Pole. It is totally covered with ice.

MULTI-SERVICE ORGANIZATION MEETING HELD AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD!

Rotarian Bill Harper sailed some 5000 miles from Amsterdam & return in 18 days. The "Top of the World" voyage went North along all of the most dramatic and beautiful coastline of Norway. Then to Spitsbergen (above Greenland) & to the Polar Ice Cap.

Some interesting peculiarities: Aug. 2-5, imagine no sunsets with 24 hours of sunlight.  Due to ships location so for North, all satellite and internet services were out for 4-5 days due to "low look angle satellite coverage." Didn't miss the news for a change!

Ships official program scheduled two "Service Club Meeting" held July 24 and Aug. 6 with another first. Imagine the attendees included 9 Rotarians (male and female) PLUS two Lions, 2 Kiwanians and 1 Mason.

The bow of MS Prinsendam proceeding slowly into the Polar Ice Cap at 81 degrees North Latitude. (Maui's at 21 degrees North!)  The Pole is at 90 degrees.

Totally productive and spread friendship as we talked about each others organizations- fundraisers, common problems, and etc..One special acquaintance was Rotarian Rob Warne (with wife also a Rotarian) who was a think tank CEO, a Professor AND President of 300 member Rotary Club of Washington, D.C. 2006-07. Another Rotarian friendship made with retired T.W.A. Pilot from Colorado and Arizona. Both meetings were most productive & informative.

To Bill's delight the visit to the edge of the Arctic Ice Cap & being only 600 miles from The North Pole fitted right into his Jan. 1972 4 days visit to Antarctica and a  5 hour visit to the actual South Pole Station operated by the U.S. Navy & National Science Foundation.

"Taste at Kapolei" events will push the Kapolei Rotary Foundation over $1 million dollar mark for monies raised for scholarships.

In seven short years, the Rotary Club of Kapolei and the Kapolei Rotary Foundation has raised $800,000 for scholarships for college-bound seniors from financially-challenged families in Leeward Oahu.

This year's festivities will reach the $1 million dollar mark. What began as a simple food and wine event at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park in 1999, has grown into an extravagant three-day affair with a different celebrity chefs in new venue each night.  Read on ...
