A Page from Paige

D5000's First Lady

Aloha District 5000 Rotarians!

What an incredible journey we have had this past month and a half since beginning the District Governor's Visits. All the clubs we have visited have been wonderful in welcoming us. We marvel at the accomplishments of each club and celebrate in their vision for the new year. The presidents are enthusiastically embracing their year with awesome projects for our community, locally and internationally. The Board meetings have been inspiring and informative. The ADG's have done an excellent job in helping DG George prepare for the club visits. The members of District 5000 are really committed to "Rock the Rock" this year! What amazing work our Rotary clubs are doing. This experience really is priceless and most of all FUN!

We have visited 39 clubs with 4 to go. Below are some highlights of our visit so far.

Maui, Rock the rock and show how "Rotary Shares" in Hawaii

The home island of the DG. Eight Rockin Clubs and a great Social with the RC Of Kihei-Wailea & Kihei-Sunrise at Mulligan's on the Blue in Wailea.

Kauai,  Rockin the Rock

Five days on Kauai, six club meetings and all Island Pot Luck Social at Lydgate Park.  Special Mahalo to ADG Laurie Yoshida who coordinated our time and the meeting schedules.  Laurie dedicated a whole week to picking us up everyday for all the meetings, certainly "Service Above Self".

Big Island- The Big Rock ROCKS!

North Hawaii, Volcano and Hilo, Aug.1-3. Back on August 5-8, for the Hilo clubs.  Mahalo to ADG's, Greg Ogin and Albert Jeyte for your help and support. Did you know that Albert Jeyte is a Chef?  We were treated to a gourmet dining experience at Albert's

Kilauea Lodge

award winning Kilauea Lodge and  Restaurant complete with the Rotary Flag flying proudly outside and the RI Wheel on front of the Lodge. Give Albert a visit next time you are in the Volcano area.

Mahalo to our Family of Rotary District Chair, Audrey Wilson who invited us to her home and cooked a delicious meal for 10 people, all by herself complete with complimenting wines and dessert! Audrey teaches cooking and with husband Jim Wilson they also operate a Bed and Breakfast, AJ's Volcano Cottages.

Falls at Reeds Island

On the Hilo side, a hidden paradise called The Falls at Reed's Island, owned and operated by RC South Hilo President Jack Stevenson. We spent 3 nights there; it's the ultimate getaway and only 5 minutes outside of Hilo town. This home is truly an architectural wonder, see it at www.reedsisland.com. Thank you,  Jack & Jane Stevenson for your hospitality.

Another wonderful place to visit is the University of Hawaii - Hilo, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center. The 'Imiloa Center is Hawaii's new interpretive center for modern astronomy, Hawaiian culture and language. Richard A. Crowe, Professor of Astronomy and Physics, Astronomer AND President of the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay, gave us a very informative tour.  Go and see the stars in a high tech dome Planetarium and say "Hi" to Richard.

We will be going back to the Kona side later this month.

Diamond Head Club's sunset view

Oahu, the Main Rock, rocks on

We have visited 20 Clubs of the 22.  Again, what warm welcomes we have received.  Meetings in hotels, country clubs, private clubs, yacht clubs, hospital and a school, I must say Diamond Head has a beautiful view of the sunset.

Mahalo, to the ADG's, Mary Ann Berry, for picking us up, Cathy Barnes, Chet Dal Santo for opening his home to us and Harvey Gray, their directions and support have made the DG Visits here very pleasant.

Each club is unique in their own way; I encourage everyone to visit and experience the different club meetings in the district. We met several Rotarians making up at different meetings with over 30, 40 & 50 years of perfect attendance. You'll meet wonderful Rotarians and make new friends.

To all the Presidents and members of District 5000, a Big Mahalo.  The Aloha Spirit is truly alive and well in District 5000.  Lets rock the Rock and show the world how ROTARY in Hawaii SHARES!"

Yours in Rotary,

Paige Fontaine

ROTARY AWARENESS DATES

As we complete September we remember that September is New Generations Month. Where Rotary salutes the many youth oriented programs sponsored by Rotary.  We also celebrated International Literacy Day on September 8th.

October 16th is World Food Day, when Rotary clubs enhance their participation in the global community by celebrating international focus days that promote Rotary's commitment to serve their communities. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization celebrates World Food Day on October 16 each year.

“The Right to Food” is the theme for 2007 World Food Day and TeleFood demonstrates increasing recognition by the international community of the important role of human rights in eradicating hunger and poverty, and hastening and deepening the sustainable development process.  The right to food is a universal right. It means that every person – woman, man and child – must have access at all times to food, or to means for the procurement of food, that is sufficient in quality, quantity and variety to meet their needs, is free from harmful substances and is acceptable to their culture.

Also recognized in October is – International Day of Older Persons on October 1st and International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on October 12th.

The Four-Way Test Means Business
Rotary’s gold standard of ethics builds friendships, attracts customers – and helps club members sleep at night

By Nancy Shepherdson
The Rotarian

At any Walgreens drugstore in the United States, you’re likely to see The Four-Way Test hanging on the wall in the manager’s office and in the pharmacy. These plaques are tangible evidence of a philosophy that has guided the company’s corporate culture for decades, championed by Rotarian Charles R. Walgreen Jr., the son of its founder.  Read on ....

Got ethics?

‘Work right, play nice, and sleep tight’

The Four-Way Test was developed 75 years ago. To see if it still applies in today’s world, Senior Editor Janice S. Chambers talked with two prominent ethicists: H. Woods Bowman and Tom Hooyman.

Moral codes and ethics give us tools but also raise questions to be answered: How should we live? What is morally good and bad, right and wrong? Shall we aim at happiness or knowledge? Virtue or the creation of beautiful objects? If we choose happiness, will it be our own or the happiness of all?  Read on ...

A concise list of talking points when promoting Rotary to non- Rotarians.  Clubs are also encouraged to create your own points as well.

Rotary International

Rotary and Peace

Rotary promotes peace and international understanding through its educational and humanitarian programs.

  • Rotary sponsors the largest privately funded international scholarship program in the world. Since its inception, about 34,000 students from 100 countries have become cultural ambassadors, and use the skills they have acquired from their studies abroad to help their communities. Each year, Rotary spends US$20 million on this program.
  • Rotary has teamed with seven universities around the world to offer a master's degree program in peace and conflict resolution.  The program aims to provide the next generation of ambassadors and social leaders with the skills needed to prevent conflicts and promote peace.
  • Rotary clubs initiate thousands of humanitarian projects every year - each child we teach to read, every adult we help learn a trade, and every community playground we build is another step toward bringing the world together.
  • By addressing the underlying problems that create instability and trigger conflicts - hunger, poverty, poor health, and illiteracy - Rotary helps promote peace.

Rotary promotes peace and international understanding through fellowship

  • With its network of more than 32,000 local clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas, Rotary members are united by a common goal of community service.
  • Belonging to a Rotary club allows people from different cultures and nationalities to establish lifelong friendships that transcend political boundaries and tensions.

Brand new Rotarian Jill Federizo helped to spear head the Early Act Club at Kapolei Middle School, while Dan Fullenwider helped to organize the Ilima Elementary Early Act in Ewa Beach, along with advisor Lydell Acosta. A JOINT SPONSORED INTERNATIONAL WATER PROJECT IS COMPLETED!

In 2005, The Rotary Club of Windward Oahu wrote a Humanitarian grant to help construct a water well for two schools and a village community of about 2,000 people at St. Paul Kaaso and St. Dominic’s primary schools in Rakai District, Uganda.

The Rotary Club of Muyenga Kampala, District 9200 sponsored the project, and we partnered with clubs in Kona, Maui, Honolulu, Lahaina, Downtown Honolulu, Upcountry Maui, District 5000, District 9200 and The Rotary Foundation to fund the project.

The community in the Rakai District of Uganda has been devastated by HIV/AIDS. In some families mothers and fathers have died, leaving only the orphans to care for themselves or be cared for by elderly relatives. These schools were started by the missionaries but now they are being run jointly with the local community.  Read on....

Shown here are Hilo Bay Rotarians with the recently installed 2007-208 Board Members of the UHH ISA.

56 Rotarians & Guests Meet Under the Stars on the Big Island!

Group photo on the staircase at Hale Pohaku on Mauna Kea (photo by Ceci Tuohy)

A multi-club Dinner and Star Party, attended by 56 Rotarians, was held on Mauna Kea on September 8th.  The evening included a talk on Hawaiian astronomy by Paul Coleman, and provided much awareness about the history of how astronomy has been a very important aspect of Hawaiian culture for generations. Only about 5% of the information has survived to the present day because 19 out of 20 Hawaiians living in the islands died off due to widespread disease after exposure to foreign visitors during the 18th and 19th centuries. The stars were beautiful and the sky was dark following the 75-minute talk!  See the photo album for more photos!

NEED SPEAKERS?

Here are a list of speaker ideas:

Effective traffic solutions for Honolulu - Wipe out traffic congestion in Honolulu, faster, cheaper and better than any rail project.  This presentation was given to the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization Citizens Advisory Committee recently.  Contact Professor Panos Prevedouros.

Contact Emily Enns to arrange for the following speakers:

Puna Geothermal Venture - Hawaii Island's home-grown alternative energy resource.
This discussion is hot given HECO's big campaign and the ongoing debate about which energy resources are viable.

Small Business Regulatory Review Board - The Board, which falls under the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, is charged with advising state and county government about the impacts that administrative rules and regulation changes have on small business. It also hears complaints from small businesses and transmits that information to government with recommendations. The mission and operations of this state-wide, all-volunteer board would be of interest to your members.  The Small Business Regulatory Review Board is comprised of 11 volunteers representing four of the islands, appointed by the Governor and ratified by the Senate.  Each board member is a small business owner.

Hawaii Coalition for Dads - A recent Washington Post article (June 17, 2007), reported federal labor statistics that show the number of fathers who are primary caregivers is about one in five. Greg Farstrup, the Hawaii Coalition for Dads coordinator and chair of the State Commission on Fatherhood is the go-to source for information on fatherhood and proposed family-friendly laws.  He can provide a perspective on issues that impact families here locally. The Hawaii Coalition for Dads (HCD) is a statewide group of individuals and organizations that share information about father-friendly services and promotes involved, responsible fathering. HCD is a resource for fathers, and provides practical info and support for fathers to thrive at home and at work. The Coalition is working to encourage businesses to re-examine their policies to make them more “father-friendly.”
