 A Message from Governor George

Aloha District 5000 Rotarians!

I Love Rotary Because…

Growing our membership is a challenge we face every year.  Many of you have heard me talk on this subject; the challenge is to share our love of Rotary to others.

How many of you have heard from the ill-informed public "Isn't Rotary a bunch old, rich guys sitting around having lunch and giving money to charity?"  Ouch!

Are you ready the next time someone notices your Rotary pin on your collar in, say an elevator, and asks you "What is that pin? Are you Rotarian?  What is Rotary all about?"

I am challenging every Rotarian in District 5000 to come up with a 30 second speech on why you love Rotary.  I'm not talking about the 30 second canned speech -- "Rotary is a worldwide organization with 1.2 million members in over 200 countries, blah, blah, blah".

The 30 second speech I'm taking about is the one that comes from your heart - a message that truly captures why you love Rotary - What drives you to commit so much of your time, talent and treasure to the greatest service organization on the planet Earth.

Try this experiment - Tonight, before you go to bed and after you brush your teeth :, look into the mirror and start by saying out loud "I love Rotary because…" and let your heart speak the remaining words and not your mind.  You'll be amazed at the results!

In closing, I would like to remind all Rotarians to wear their Rotary pins with pride everyday.  You were invited to be a member of Rotary by your fellow peers and club members and it is a great honor.  Displaying your pin is one way of acknowledging that honor.

I know personally, that I have been approached several times this year by other Rotarians and the public asking me about my pin.  Believe me, the pin works! If you're worried about putting holes in your nice clothes, Rotary vendors are now selling Rotary pins with super strong magnetic backs so the "holes in my clothes" excuse isn't valid anymore!  Ask your club president to share their catalogs, or check online.

Yours in Rotary,

DG George

Oahu Camp scheduled for

November 10 - 12, 2007

Go to the RYLA page on the district website to download the brochure, the application & the volunteer affidavit forms.

From Dick Starkweather, District Secretary

As the year begins, there have been questions arising concerning attendance.  I have included some frequently asked questions that you may find helpful:

WHAT IS THE 80+ RULE?

Members with a combined age and years of membership (in one or more clubs) totals at least 85 years may submit a written notice to the club secretary, asking to be excused from attendance; the board must approve the request before the member is excluded from attendance.

WHEN ARE THE ATTENDANCE REPORTS DUE?

Attendance reports must be submitted to Rotary International within 15 days of the last meeting of each month.  Each club is requested to submit its report to District within 10 days of the last meeting of each month to allow all reports to be submitted to the District Governor and Rotary International in the time requested.

MAKE-UPS

You may give attendance credit to a member who misses a club meeting if, within 14 days before or after the missed meeting, the member completes a makeup meeting.

WHAT QUALIFIES AS A MAKE-UP?

Make-ups can be performed in many different ways:

  1. Attend at least 60 percent of another clubs meeting.
  2. Is present at the usual time and place of another club's regular meeting and that club is not meeting.
  3. Participates directly and actively in a service project sponsored by the District, RI, or The Rotary Foundation in a remote area where a make-up opportunity isn't possible.
  4. Attends a meeting of any of the following: Rotaract club, Interact club, Rotary Community Corps, a provisional Rotaract or Interact club or Rotary Community Corps or a meeting of a Rotary Fellowship.
  5. Attends or participates in a club service project or club-sponsored community event or meeting authorized by the board.
  6. Attends a board meeting, or, if authorized by the board, a meeting of a service committee to which a member is assigned.
  7. Participates through a club web site in an interactive activity requiring an average of 30 minutes of participation.

IS ATTENDANCE COUNTED IF OUR CLUB CANCELS ITS MEETING?

When calculating the clubs monthly attendance report, you can omit a regular meeting that is cancelled for one of the following reasons:

- Legal holiday
- Death of a member
- Epidemic or disaster affecting the entire community
- Armed conflict in the community that endangers the lives of club members

Additionally, the board may cancel up to four meetings per Rotary year for causes not otherwise specified, provided that the club does not fail to meet for more than three consecutive meetings.

Don't include these canceled meetings when calculating attendance.

ROTARY AWARENESS DATES

October 16th is World Food Day, when Rotary clubs enhance their participation in the global community by celebrating international focus days that promote Rotary's commitment to serve their communities. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization celebrates World Food Day on October 16 each year.

“The Right to Food” is the theme for 2007 World Food Day and TeleFood demonstrates increasing recognition by the international community of the important role of human rights in eradicating hunger and poverty, and hastening and deepening the sustainable development process.  The right to food is a universal right. It means that every person – woman, man and child – must have access at all times to food, or to means for the procurement of food, that is sufficient in quality, quantity and variety to meet their needs, is free from harmful substances and is acceptable to their culture.

Also recognized in October is – International Day of Older Persons on October 1st and International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on October 12th.

August 2007 Rotarian

And the Winner is ...

By Helena Oh, The Rotarian

Like many clubs, the Rotary Club of Golden, Colo., USA, sponsors an annual ethics awards competition for local businesses – but with a special twist. The club honors companies that follow not only The Four-Way Test but also “cowboy ethics,” which calls for living each day with courage, being tough but fair, and talking less but saying more, among other things. A 2004 book, Cowboy Ethics: What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West, inspired the theme.

The club cosponsored the second Golden Ethics in Business Awards with the Greater Golden Chamber of C

ommerce and the West Chamber Serving Jefferson County. Ed Greene, weather forecaster for Denver’s CBS television affiliate, was master of ceremonies, and Dan Ritchie, chancellor emeritus at the University of Denver, delivered the keynote address. A Colorado School of Mines professor, along with some of her ethics students, evaluated the for-profit and nonprofit entries on criteria such as environmental record, employee relations, community involvement, and customer service.

PolioPlus

Rotary's top philanthropic goal is to end polio worldwide.

Polio, a crippling and sometimes deadly disease, still threatens children in parts of Africa and Asia.

Rotary members have donated their time and money to help immunize more than 2 billion children in 122 countries.

Rotary is the largest private supporter of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, committing more than $600 million dollars and thousands of volunteers to the effort.

For as little as 60 cents worth of oral polio vaccine, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.

Tremendous progress has been made toward ending polio worldwide.

In the 1980s, about 1,000 children were infected by this crippling disease every day. In the two decades since Rotary and its global partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, polio cases have been slashed by 99 percent.

Rotary will continue the fight until the world is certified polio-free and every child is safe from this devastating disease.

ROTARY CLUBS OF HIROSHIMA SOUTHEAST AND PEARL HARBOR
BLAISDELL PARK TREE PLANTING CEREMONY

The history and significance of the tree planting ceremony observed by the Rotary Clubs of Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima Southeast is based on the desire of both clubs to establish a memoriam to honor those killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor and dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima.

Mr. Hirotani PP RCHSE asked, during our club visit to Hiroshima in 1990.  If it would be possible for their club to plant a peace tree on the shores of Pearl Harbor to show their remorse for, and to honor, the memory of those military and civilians who lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor.   Read on ...  and see the pictures .

KAUAI

 ROTARY CLUB OF HANALEI

“Growing our own Teachers”

The pictureshows some of the Teacher Candidates, UH Faculty Advisor, Dr. Ka’ani Blackwell

and many Hanalei Bay Rotarians at the sale.

This is a program from the University of Hawaii at Manoa whereby teacher candidates on the neighbor islands can get their teaching credentials without having to go to Oahu to study.  They take the first two years of study at Kauai Community College, then UH professors come to Kauai for the balance of their studies.  The last semester of their senior year, the candidates must be in a classroom full time and are not able to hold a job during that time.

Many candidates are single moms or other providers for their families and without assistance would have to drop out of the program.  We are raising funds to provide each candidate with a $4,000 award to get them through the program with the stipulation that they spend at least three years teaching in our schools.

On September 15th we had the “Mother of all Garage Sales” in Kilauea where we raised over $4,800 for the program.  We have been challenged by the Stanny Foundation who will match our funds up to $17,000, so the $4,800 will bring $9,600 toward our goal.

The Poipu Beach Club contributed $8,000 and the Kapa’a Club $4,000.  This project has been adopted by all of the Kauai Clubs and will be an annual project since the need for more teachers is critical to our children and their schools.

Rotary Club of Hanalei Hosts Two Exchange Students from Japan

The Rotary Club of Hanalei hosted two short term exchange students for two weeks in August.  Both were sponsored by the Kihei-Wailea Club on Maui and spent the first part of their visit there.  They are Haruka Minato (female) and Yasuhide Kunishige (male) both attending Dosisha University in Kyoto, Japan.  The attached picture shows the students along with some of the Rotarians from Hanalei Bay who kept them busy on Kauai.  They went on hikes, attended a polo match, went sailing on Hanalei Bay, went to a luau, had several beach days for boogie boarding, went to Kokee State Park to view Waimea Canyon and the Kalalau Lookout, went to Kilauea Lighthouse National Wildlife Reserve, toured the botanical gardens at Na Aina Kai, went to a beach cookout with long term exchange students from Chile, Brazil and Italy and more.  Haruka and Shige performed the Japanese Tea Ceremony for Rotarian George Corrigan and his wife.

Celebrating Life

Celebrating the life of

DR. JOHN DILLON

Dr. John Dillon, founding member of the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach, died this past week.

After WWII, Dr. Dillon enrolled in medical school, specialized in anesthesiology, and taught several generations of medical students.

After Hurricaine Iniki, Dr. Dillon kept the outside world in touch with Kauai via short-wave radio rigged to his car battery which he brought into his house atop Poipu Crater.

His wife was a nurse and he established a nursing scholarship in her name at Kaua'i Community College with an initial contribution of $100,000.  The scholarship fund, now grown to include culinary and teaching students, is administered by the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach.

At the request of Dr. Dillon, there will be no formal memorial service for him.  We will miss our dear friend and Rotarian.
