ROTARY AWARENESS DATES

October 16th is World Food Day, when Rotary clubs enhance their participation in the global community by celebrating international focus days that promote Rotary's commitment to serve their communities. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization celebrates World Food Day on October 16 each year.
“The Right to Food” is the theme for 2007 World Food Day and TeleFood demonstrates increasing recognition by the international community of the important role of human rights in eradicating hunger and poverty, and hastening and deepening the sustainable development process. The right to food is a universal right. It means that every person – woman, man and child – must have access at all times to food, or to means for the procurement of food, that is sufficient in quality, quantity and variety to meet their needs, is free from harmful substances and is acceptable to their culture.
Also recognized in October is – International Day of Older Persons on October 1st and International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on October 12th.

ROTARY CLUB OF HONOLULU SUNSET AND UH MANOA ROTARACT CLUB
SEND 21 GOATS TO KENYA
For 2006-2007 the University of Hawaii at Manoa Rotaract Club sold brownies and cookies on campus and local Rotary clubs, especially their sponsor Rotary club Honolulu Sunset Rotary Club, for their International Service project in Kenya.
They have worked with a non profit organization, Heifer International, that sends livestock (beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, pigs, and goats) to underdeveloped countries at a discounted price from either the United States or the Netherlands. Heifer International delivers the livestock to the village in Kenya.
This project via Heifer International is overall a three million dollar project. Heifer International not only supplies the animals at cost, but delivers the animals to the destination and provides technical assistance for care of the animals.
The UH-Manoa Rotaract Club sent 21 goats ($ 120.00 per goat) to a village in Kenya so young children would have access to milk and meat as well as learn animal husbandry skills as their contribution toward health, hunger, and humanity.
This Rotary year, 2007-2008, the University of Hawaii at Manoa is raising funds to provide an artificial hand for those unfortunate to lose a hand in the conflicts occurring in Africa in hope that those fitted with an artificial hand will be better able to have a more productive life. If the UH-Manoa Rotaractors visit your Rotary Club to raise funds for this project, please help support their humanitarian efforts.

October 29 Meeting "Field Trip" Aboard the Pride of America Cruise Ship

All Aboard! October is Vocational Services month - time again to take Rotary on the Road and get a behind-the-scenes look at what makes a Maui business run...or float.
Join the Kahului Rotary Club for a tour of the tallest (moving) building on the island: NCL America's 15-story Pride of America.
Mark your calendars for Monday, October 29. In lieu of our regular club meeting, we'll be at the Kahului Port pier at 11:45am. We'll get a private tour and then have lunch. They'll do a headcount so...no stowaways!
The cruise ships are on high security alert, which means we need you all to do a little advance planning. Please sign up this Monday and next week at our club check-in desk if you will be joining us on the ship 10/29. NCL needs our final numbers 10/23. We'll need a little extra info from you so people with guns don't try take you away at the dock:
- Legal name
- Date of Birth
- Citizenship
- ID # (Must be a Driver's License, Passport or State ID) - whichever ID you'll show on the day of the event
If you would like to join us, please call or email Annalena (azanolin@boh.com or 243-8122) with your info no later tan October 22.
We hope you can join us - have you SEEN those buffets?!?!
