ALOHA DISTRICT 5000 ROTARIANS!!

These past four months have been incredible. Paige and I have completed all of our official club visits and we are both in awe at the tremendous work that Rotarians across the state are accomplishing.
A couple of weeks ago, Paige and I attended the Zone Institute in Long Beach, Ca. Zone Institute follows GNATS (Governor Nominee Training Seminar) GETS (Governor Elect Training Seminar) which DGN Lisa Foster and DGE Ayman El Dakhakhni attended. Over 500 Rotarians and guests attended this event for past, current and future Rotary leaders in Zones 23 & 24. This is one of 17 such Institutes held around the world of Rotary this fall. This year's institute theme was "The Power of One" - the power of one individual Rotarian to effect change and make a difference in the world. As you all heard during my message during my club visit, each of us need to make a commitment to do something this year -- whether it is in your club, in your community or in the world community.
The Institute also emphasized the obligation for all of us to act and the opportunities to act are enormous. The Power of One -- to lead, to make it fun, to teach, to instill ethics, to act ethically, to build friendships, to promote world peace, to eliminate poverty, and to strengthen our Rotary family as well as your own. All of you have been empowered as Rotarians to do this; you only need to make the conscious decision that you will. The Zone Institute also focused on ethics and how Rotary can promote ethics in our society. Two Rotary programs -- RYLA and Interact were cited as two key areas where Rotary can truly make a difference in building ethical behavior in children who will be our future leaders. All Rotarians should do their part to support these tremendous programs.
I would like to invite all of you to visit the Zone 23 & 24 website www.rotaryzone2324.org and learn more about the Ethics Task Force that has been created.
On October 25th, Paige and I were invited to preside over the Kauai Island Humanitarian Awards dinner held at the Hilton Resort, Kauai. Six humanitarian awards were given to outstanding non-Rotarian individuals who have exemplified the meaning of Service Above Self in their personal and professional lives. The awardees were chosen from those working in the profession of Human Concerns - Police, Fire, Hospice, Social Work, etc. This was an outstanding event and I hope it will continue every year as a tradition. Kauai has certainly raised the bar in Vocational Service and all of us should follow their lead in doing our part to do proper recognition in our community.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
DG George

NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH
Give a gift to The Rotary Foundation today.
Whether you give to a particular program, the Annual Programs Fund (APF), the Permanent Fund (PF), the Paul Harris Society (PHS), The Peace Centers, Endowing a Peace Scholarship, The Rotary Centers Major Gifts Initiative, PolioPlus Partners, Scholarship Programs, GSE or
any other worthy TRF designation, 100 percent of your gift will be directed as you indicate.
More than a million donors put their money where their hearts are
During the past 50 years, over a million people have contributed US$1,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation, earning the designation of Paul Harris Fellow – named after Rotary’s founder. These donors span an egalitarian range, from big-city corporate executives to small-town schoolteachers. For many, $1,000 is no small sum.
This milestone represents a total of US$1 billion that has been at work making a profound difference in peoples’ lives around the world since the first Paul Harris Fellow was named in 1957. Paul Harris Fellows and the gifts they represent enable The Rotary Foundation to be one of the great humanitarian and educational foundations working for world peace and understanding.

POLIO ERADICATION IS REALISTIC
"HAWAIIAN" ROTARIANS MAKE A STRONG SHOWING OF COMMITMENT
Submitted by Sonya Mendez
Decades ago, polio outbreaks were a constant threat around the world. After the introduction
of polio vaccines by Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin and a steadfast immunization effort, these outbreaks became part of history in most of the world.
Yet many still live under the threat of polio, which is why Rotary and its global partners are committed to reaching every child with the vaccine and ending this disease worldwide.

"Hawaiian" Rotarians make a strong showing of commitment to eradicate polio at the Rotary Polio Plus NID in Ethiopia, Africa on Oct.19 and 20.
The Ethiopians and other Rotarians affectionately referred to the Hawaii Rotary contingency as the "Hawaiians" ever since they attended last year's NID laden with 500 silk lei donated by Honolulu Club Rotarian Tom Matthews. This year, a reported 14 million children in Ethiopia were immunized with the help of over 30,000 volunteers from Rotary, the World Health Organization, World Vision, Rotaract and other organizations over the two-day NID. The "Hawaiians" shared the aloha spirit with more colorful silk lei, in addition to much needed school supplies.
Each Rotarian brought an extra suitcase packed with the maximum 50 pounds containing over 30 soccer balls, 26 wall maps, 400 8 x 11 color maps of the world, 2500 pencils, 3000 pens, 400 pencil sharpeners, 1000 crayons, coloring books, rulers, t-shirts from the Great Aloha Run, stickers, and lots more. Pictured at the official kick-off of the NID at the Geda Health Center in Nazret, Ethiopia (about an hour's drive outside Addis Ababa) are:

MAUI
Celebrating Seventy Years of Maui Rotary

In November of 1937 the Rotary Club of Maui was chartered as the first Valley Isle Rotary Club. Today there are eight Rotary clubs on Maui with a combined membership of over 300 men and women.
YOU ARE INVITED to a multi-club social to celebrate seventy years of Service Above Self on Maui at the King Kamehameha Golf Club.
No host cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner. The Hawaiian Serenaders will set the festive mood. Each attendee will receive a historical book by Jill Engledow covering Rotary on Maui since 1937 growing to eight clubs, with over 300
Rotarians, providing service locally and internationally.
A historical slide show will be presented and District Governor George Fontaine will inspire us as we look to the future. Then Jimmy Mac and the Kool Kats will take over for a fun filled event. For this evening of Aloha, a celebration, not a fund raiser, tickets including menu are $75.00 and tables of 12 may be reserved. To reserve tables and buy tickets contact Lisa Yoshida at lt@t-dcpa.com or telephone 573-0501, 244-3785 or 283-2536

ALL ABOARD!
The Kahului Club tours the Pride of America!
submitted by Leslie Mullens
|
|

What do raspberry sorbet, hand sanitizer, and sweeping staircases straight out of “Gone with the Wind” have in common? They were all stops on our grand tour of Norwegian Cruise Lines Pride of America last week.
More than 30 Rotarians and guests braved the security screening to join us on our second annual Rotary on the Road trip. The cruise ships are a common sight in our harbor, but only David Cain and the Zanolini 'ohana had been on one of Kahului’s giant mobile resorts before. After a few hours on the vessel, though, quite a few of us were ready to sign up for the next inter-island cruise.
This ship, the newest of the fleet, was a wonder in amenities and thematic décor. Every deck, dining room, and theater was dressed out to represent a period of American history and grandeur. Our tour spanned five of the fifteen decks, taking us through several themed restaurants (David Hoffman nearly fainted from hunger outside the 24-hour diner), a spa & fitness center that rivals any on Maui, and all of the main attractions that make a cruise on this ship so appealing (nightclubs, theaters, cafes, lounges). We even got “unauthorized access” to one of the guest suites.
|

Kahului President Randol Leach with Assistant Hotel Director and fellow Rotarian Holly Weberg
|
And lunch in the grand Liberty Dining Room was well worth the wait! As we met some of the staff – including Holly Weberg, the Century City Rotarian – a four-course gourmet meal was laid out for us. Lettuce wraps, taco salads, macadamia nut soup, seared ahi, leg of lamb, and a beautiful raspberry sorbet were served up to our hungry bunch with great fanfare. We even got a little dinner theater when our own Joe Sanvidotto tickled the ivories - a man who's never met a baby grand he didn't like.
This was also a fantastic opportunity to bring prospective members along to see the kinds of fun experiences and fellowship Rotary offers. Thanks Annalena, Joe, Tony Levoy, Dave Merchant, David Hoffman, and Don for taking advantage of bringing guests out on the tour.
Thanks to NCL and Annalena for coordinating the trip that rounded out Vocational Service month, and big mahalos to Don Lucas, as well, for simplifying the travel and parking arrangements with his tour bus fleet.

Jim Wilson named Rotarian of the Month
for South Hilo
A member of the Rotary Club Of South Hilo since 1967, Club Secretary since 2005, club newsletter editor, coordinator of the four club bulletin in the HTH and was the District Bulletin for DG Jim Varner. 2006-2007, Jim is the only South Hilo Rotarian to teach the children of Thailand how to say "awarsh" instead of "awash", and now we are sending a team back to teach the children the proper way to speak, - without an Oklahoma drawl.
Jim is always willing to open up their home, allowing Audrey Wilson to cook for troops of Rotarians, whether it is Youth Exchange, Group Study Exchange, ESL (English as a Second Language) training or a Rotary social. If you need high attendance at an activity just include food via the Wilsons. Congratulations Jim Wilson, Rotarian of the Month.

ROTARIANS HONOR SIX UNSUNG HEROS
submitted by Laurie Yoshida, AG Kauai

LIHUE, KAUA`I – “I feel like I found my calling. It’s just so rewarding!” remarked Doreen
Sautner of Kauai Hospice, after she was presented with an award recognizing humanitarian
service in the community by the Rotary Club of Kauai. Doreen has been a registered nurse with
Kauai Hospice since 1999. As a longtime employee, she has provided compassionate and
competent care to individuals making the transition. Doreen also provides inspiration and
support to the entire Hospice team. She is passionate about her job.
The six Rotary Clubs that span from the west side of Kauai all the way to Hanalei Bay gathered
at the Hilton Kauai Beach Resort to honor a few of the unsung heroes that serve our island
community so selflessly and tirelessly, yet rarely receive recognition for their heroic efforts. The
43 Rotary Clubs of Hawaii and their 2200 Rotarians had accepted a challenge by George
Fontaine, Rotary district governor. Read on ...

Humanitarian Award Presented by Kauai Rotary Clubs
Submitted by William R. "Bill" Harper
|
|

The District Governor's Citation & Vocational Service Challenge was addressed on October 26 at a sumptuous Hilton Hotel Buffet Dinner.
President-elect Tyler Chihara announced our choice in the Hospice Worker category as Dorene Sautner, a Registered Nurse of Kauai Hospice. Dorene's nomination was strongly supported by 10 co-workers who attended the dinner along with an audience of 100 including DG George Fontaine and his spouse Paige as well as Kauai's Mayor.
The Award consisted of a special commemorative plaque presented by the District Governor and a $500 check from Kauai Club Rotarians in Dorene's honor which she graciously donated to Kauai Hospice.. She was best described as a dedicated, loving and compassionate member of the Kauai Hospice team. Rotarians were so pleased to be of service once again here in our community.

"GROWING OUR OWN TEACHERS ON KAUA'I"
|

Pictured left to right: Robert Dickstein, Scholarship Chair, Cal Stanny, Dr. Ka'ani Blackwell, Club President Sally Motta
|
The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay is supporting a new program of the University of Hawaii at Manoa called "Growing our own Teachers on Kaua'i". The program is administered by Dr. Ka'ani Blackwell, a professor at UH Manoa who resides on Kaua'i. Prospective teachers can get their first two years of training at Kaua'i Community College and the rest of their education by UH Professors who come to Kaua'i. The problem for the students comes up in their last semester when they must serve in a classroom for five days a week from 8 to 5 without any pay. In order to do so, they have to quit their jobs. Many candidates are working moms who without some financial assistance would have to drop out of the program.
They need $4,000 for that last semester to complete their training. There are 13 candidates so we needed to raise $52,000. Mr. Cal Stanny offered us a challenge. If we could raise $17,000 the Stanny Foundation would match it giving us $34,000 toward our goal.
Through the efforts of our Scholarship Chair Robert Dickstein and the assistance of the Clubs at Kapa'a, Poipu Beach and Kalepa Sunrise we have exceeded our $52,000 goal and received the Stanny Foundation Grant. The scholarship committee consisting of Rotarians from the participating Clubs will be interviewing the candidates on November 10th and awarding the scholarships. Our new teachers will be teaching our children during the next school year.
