ALOHA FELLOW ROTARIANS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
The New Year has begun and for me it is a time of reflection. 2007 was an incredible year for District 5000 and 2008 promises to be even better. As we start the New Year together, I would like all of you to reflect on two words --
"Me-ness and Us-ness". I know, they're not real words, but they describe a state of mind so poignantly.
During the holidays we can feel a tremendous amount of "Me-ness" - the presents I received, eating foods and drink that I like to indulge in; basically thinking about things that are important to "me" and giving myself "me" time. "Me-ness" is not necessarily a bad thing as long as it is done in moderation so that we never lose sight of "Us-ness" which is my made up word to describe the state of mind that is so beautifully stated in our theme this year "Rotary Shares".
"Us-ness" means the world is not all about "me". If we truly value our own spiritual selves we realize that "me" is not the path to spiritual fulfillment and happiness. Joy really comes from giving the gifts we have been blessed with and sharing our lives with those who are much less fortunate. My New Year's resolution this year is to really concentrate on my own "Us-ness" and truly make a difference in my community and the world. Will you join me in my New Year's resolution?
On January 26th, District 5000 will hold it's first ever Membership Summit at Chaminade University, Oahu. The purpose of the summit is to brain storm new ideas for recruiting and retaining membership. As you know, we struggle with membership every year. Despite our best efforts, we add a few hundred members every year, but end up losing the same number or more. What we're doing with membership is not working and we need new ideas. If you have any ideas on how we can do things differently we want to hear them! Please join us at the Membership Summit and share your ideas. Please contact Membership Chair Laura Steelquist (laura@himed.cc) for more information.
Yours in Rotary,
DG George

Board Acts on New Member Reporting
|
|
At its October/November meeting, the RI
Board agreed to establish a timeline for
clubs to report their new members. The
Board made this change to facilitate the
2007 Council on Legislation's action to
change to a monthly collection cycle for
prorated RI membership dues.
Under the new system, every Rotarian
pays for each full month of club membership.
For example, a new member who
joins the club on the 1st of the month pays
dues beginning with that month, but a
member joins on the 3rd pays dues
beginning with the next month.
New members must be reported within six
months of joining their Rotary club.
|
In other action, the Board voted to
- Adopt a new RI privacy statement that
assures transparency in how RI collects,
retains, and uses Rotarians' personal
information
- Discontinue RI's membership zone
coordinator position and increase the
number of regional RI membership
coordinators, effective 1 July 2008
- Request financial statements of
revenues and expenditures from any
unofficial Rotary program, group, or
entity using "Rotary" in its name
- Affirm the Rotary Foundation Trustees
decision to require the signatures of
both the district governor and district
Rotary Foundation committee chair for
use of the District Designated Fund

FROM THE GENERAL SECRETARY
The Time is Right for Increasing Membership
Today, Rotary enjoys unprecedented prominence throughout the world, thanks in large part to our polio eradication efforts, the Rotary Centers peace program, and our partnerships with other leading organizations. Supported by RI resources, our clubs and districts have achieved great success in making their good work known in their local communities and enhancing Rotary's public image. And recently, London's Financial Times ranked Rotary International as one of the top five nongovernmental organizations for corporate partnerships.
This convergence of positive publicity has created an ideal climate for membership recruitment. The stars are aligned, but it's up to each club to make the most of this favorable situation. As we enter the second half of the Rotary year, it's a good time to assess membership statistics. Where does your club stand in comparison to 30 June 2007? How many new members have you brought in? And don't forget about retention. It's even more important - and easier - to keep active members than to recruit new ones.
If your mid-year assessment shows a loss of members, it's time to change your strategy. Visit www.rotary.org to find resources that will help you develop new tactics for recruitment and retention. A few ideas: Download the retention model and other club assessment tools to create an accurate profile of your membership.
Give all new members a copy of Rotary Basics (595-EN) to jumpstart their Rotary education. Use the Humanity in Motion public service announcements your club will receive this month to promote your service projects. And don't forget to give a new member sponsor pin to everyone who brings in a new member this year.
The second half of the year is the time to step up your efforts, not wind down. Let's show Rotary Shares by sharing Rotary.

HUMANITY IN MOTION IV
The fourth edition of Humanity in Motion will be sent to all clubs for use in promoting Rotary locally. Carrying a membership message, this edition emphasizes the ways that Rotary enables members to make positive contributions in the world and showcases the many attributes of the typical Rotarian. Like the first three editions, Humanity in Motion IV includes television and radio public service announcements (PSAs), a newspaper supplement, and print and billboard PSAs. Rotarians are encouraged to tailor the PSAs to their local community.
Rotary clubs have used these tools in a number of creative ways. For example, the Rotary Club of Kawaguchi/Hatogaya Bunan, Japan, placed small Rotary billboards on the back of 1,000 taxis. In Canada, the Rotary Club of Westmount, Québec, created a 16-page color magazine using the Humanity in Motion supplement and PSAs to highlight Rotary’s initiatives to eradicate polio and promote peace. The club personalized the articles and PSAs to feature local service projects. The magazine was then distributed in a local newspaper to 10,000 homes.
With its membership focus, Humanity in Motion IV complements the third edition, distributed in 2006-07, which focuses on polio, peace through international education, literacy, the environment, and other issues that Rotarians are addressing. Clubs are encouraged to use all these tools--and personalize them as appropriate--to promote Rotary in their community.

KAPOLEI ROTARIANS STEP UP TO THE PLATE ON NEW YEAR'S DAY
Submitted by Sonya Mendez, Rotary Club of Kapolei
|

Sonya Mendez, District Community Service Chair, with U.S. veterans from the Vietnam and Iraq wars, and Desert Storm
|
New Year's Day has historically been a day where people either sleep in from a long night of celebration, get together with congregation members to pound mochi, eat sashimi with family for good luck or spend a lazy day with friends watching football games in-between trips to the extravagant spread of food on the dining table.
For the Kapolei Rotarians, the morning will be spent delivering a hot, delicious meal for 200 U.S. veterans that call Barbers Point their home. This is the headquarters for the U.S. Veterans Organization in Hawaii, which provides a transitional housing area for veterans from the Vietnam war, Desert Storm and Iraq war, while they learn new skills, attend classes or receive treatment. While many non-profit organizations and groups provide meals to the veterans year round, many declined to provide the meal specifically on January 1 because of prior family commitments, and many restaurants and catering companies will be closed.
The Kapolei Rotarians, however, have stepped up to the plate to make sure the veterans are not forgotten on this very important day of the new year. Kapolei Rotarians provided a Christmas meal last year, but learned that the number of veterans at the shelter this year have doubled - from 100 to 200.

KAHULUI'S ANNUAL MICHAEL H. LYONS II MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT A HUGE SUCCESS!
Submitted by Leslie Mullens
|
|
Over 100 golfers and volunteers joined the Rotary Club of Kahului at The Dunes at Maui Lani for their second annual Bank of Hawaii Michael H. Lyons II Memorial Golf Tournament in December. “We were overwhelmed with the business community’s response and just amazed at the amount of money we raised,” said tournament administrator Leslie Mullens.
Raising more than $15,000, golfers played for a chance to win a Toyota Camry and golf packages for four at the best courses Maui county offers, including lunch and four rounds at Kapalua’s Plantation Course and a day trip to Lanai to play the Four Season’s Experience at Koele and Challenge at Manele.
This year’s Rotary Cup winners were Chuck Bergson of the Rotary Club of Lahaina and partner Glenn Yamasaki from Bank of Hawaii. The trophy will reside with Bergson’s club, complete with the bragging rights that go with it, until the next tournament.
Closing out the day, golfers were treated to a “19th Hole” cocktail party courtesy of Goodfellow Bros. and dinner catered by Café o Lei. Other major tournament sponsors included Kaheawa Wind Power, Wal Mart, the A&B Foundation, Maui Toyota, and Mette Lyons and the Lyons Family.
Mike Lyons, the tournament’s namesake, was a devoted Rotarian and community leader. He had served as the Kahului club’s president and as district governor, among his many contributions to the organization. Mike died in 2004. As a celebration of his life and a continuation of his impact, the club and his family instituted an endowment fund in his name to provide scholarships to college bound Maui youth.
The $15,000 profit will fund college scholarships for exceptional Maui youth as well as local community service projects in the coming year. The team is already looking towards next year’s event and have created a Golf Tournament Planning Guide to be shared with other clubs in the district. “It’s a fun fundraiser for the entire club to be involved in,” said Mullens. “We’re so grateful to everyone who helped. We want to share our success with others.” For more information and a copy of the guide, email lmullens@yahoo.com.
