A MESSAGE FROM DG GEORGE
Aloha Fellow Rotarians,
This past month has been both busy and productive for District 5000. On January 26th, our district held its first membership summit. Over 40 Rotarians and district leaders attended the summit. Every year, our district struggles to grow its membership base and our membership chair Mrs. Laura Steelquist did a fantastic job of organizing this event and facilitating the discussion which resulted in some terrific new ideas on how to grow and retain membership. Every club president has been given a compilation of the ideas that were garnered with the hope that every club would hold its own membership summit at your next club assembly.
On February 4th, our district began our statewide public relations campaign with Oceanic Time Warner. The district was awarded a $6,000 public relations grant by Rotary International in December. The public service announcements which will air on all major channels – CNN, Discovery channel, History Channel, FOX, etc. for six weeks feature the new Humanity in Motion IV video clips from RI which have been customize by PDG Linda Coble for Hawaii. My thanks to PDG Linda for her efforts in both writing and applying for the PR grant, negotiating our contract with Oceanic Time Warner, and doing the video production work.
Congratulations to President Larry Laird ( RC of Kihei-Sunrise) and his wife Joanne for organizing and hosting the Maui RYLA on February 8-10th. Over 80 Rotarians on Maui volunteered to make this the most successful Maui RYLA ever with over 70 students participating.
DGE Ayman El Dakhakhni held his Pre-PETS on February 16th, followed by Leadership Training on February 17th at the Prince Kuhio hotel in Waikiki. Also, please keep an eye out for more information on the new District 5000 Leadership Academy. Your president was given information about it at the last presidents meeting on February 2nd. PDG Jim Varner, who is Dean of our academy, is doing a fantastic job putting this together he should be releasing more information within the next week or two.
One last thought – Consider doing something special for your club president on “Presidents Day”. He or she has been working hard this past year and deserves a pat on the back for a job well done!
Happy Valentines Day!
DG George Fontaine

John Steelquist, District 5000 Water Resource Group Coordinator.
March 22 is World Water Day
We all know that some 6,000 people, mostly children under the age of five, die each day due to the lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene. It is only the tip of the iceberg, and this daily tragedy reminds us that water is the most vital need of humanity. Water is critical for health, food security, and peace, and none of these issues will become easier in the future.
The Water Resource Group and the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group are among the most active programs in Rotary This year Rotary International is sponsoring a half-day Conference at FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Headquarters-Rome, 24 March.
The Rotary and Water Conference’s aim is to create awareness about scarcity of water issues now and in the future, even in developed countries. This is the subject of the Italian Project that will be presented by the 10 Italian District Governors.
The Rotary and Water Conference will also give participants an opportunity to learn more about Rotary and Water related projects, exchange ideas about water solutions, and identify project opportunities. The Rotary and Water Conference enhances and complements the celebration of World Water Day by the United Nations’ agencies, occurring on 22nd of March.
Our clubs in District 5000 are encouraged to conduct a Water Project or have a discussion about water during their meetings March 17-March 21. Since this is also spring break, our Interact or Rotaract Clubs might be able to participate.
World TB Day - March 24th
World TB Day, falling on 24 March each year, is designed to build public awareness that tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of several million people each year, mostly in the third world. 24 March commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch's announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. Koch's discovery opened the way toward diagnosing and curing tuberculosis.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE DISTRICT?

District 5000 Clubs,
On April 29, 2006, District 5340 held the first “Rotarians at Work Day” when each of the 60 clubs in the District came forward and identified one or more projects that they performed. Many clubs partnered with other clubs including those in Mexico, and nearly all of the clubs integrated other groups to assist such as Rotaract Clubs, Interact Clubs, and the Family of Rotary. Rotarians planted trees, performed much needed maintenance to our communities’ highways, senior centers, a variety of public buildings such as schools, parks and even the facility which hosts RYLA each year.
In 2007, more Districts across the Rotary World participated to help this project grow. At this point in time at least 14 Districts spanning 8 countries have agreed to participate in the coming years.
For 2008, April 26 will be “Rotarians at Work Day” and District 5000 can be part of it. Remember that every club in our District did a significant Centennial Project. We have been doing “Rotary Gives Thanks” in November each year. Now, we can join in this world-wide day of Service Above Self.
Let’s do it!

FARVEL DANMARK
The five weeks in Denmark will always be in our hearts. The Rotarians, each and every one of them, extended the warmest welcome to our team. The fellowship was more than one could expect and they did all they could to make us more than welcome.
I’ve been to Denmark many times before, but seeing Denmark with new eyes and very close up made a lasting and unique impression on me that will always remain a very memorable experience.
A very much appreciated thank you to our D5000 Governor George Fontaine, and of course to our Foundation Chair Hal Darcey. Thank you Marietta Bustamante, D5000 GSE Chair, for being there with the administration, support and advice to all during this large undertaking. Thank you to the team - Lance, Joel, Kristina and Daniel for being professional, friendly and ready for the changes that needed to be taken.
I feel we had a great experience.
Aloha and Mahalo

Youth Exchange Students Explore Hawaii Island
Submitted by Leila Fuller
On January 4-7, 2008 District 5000 youth exchange students gathered on the island of Hawaii for their annual trip. This year’s inbound and next year’s outbound students spent the weekend exploring Hawaii and learning of its unique environment. High school students from and going to different countries, shared their hopes, dreams and a whole lot of fun.
This year’s record 22 students arrived at Kilauea Military Camp Friday evening to begin their weekend learning about volcanoes, rain forests, snow and themselves. This outing is the beginning of the orientation process for Hawaii students departing in August 2008. They have the opportunity to get to know each other and develop the support network that will help guide them during the year abroad. The students visiting Hawaii for this academic year shared their experiences of preparing for their exchange. They also gave the students pointers and suggestions on how to deal with some of the difficult periods such as home sickness, language barriers and of course adjusting to living with your “new” family.
Alicia Estan-Cerezo, from Spain and hosted by the Rotary Club of Kauai wrote the following about her experience on big island:
“We did one trip so far to Big Island in January. Over there, 9 exchange students and 12 other who will be exchange students next year. We had so much doing funny activities and meeting the rest of the students. The first day we were playing games to know each other better. The second day we went to hiking to a very beautiful volcano and we also went to a cave. At night we went to a Rotarian ‘s house and we had dinner over there and we met the Rotarians, they were really nice and they made us a cake with exchange student 2007-2008. The third day we went shopping and we also went to the snow. I really had a very good time in the snow, playing with the students and having so much fun, then we went to Cheryl’s house to have dinner. The last day we went to the beach and we paddle in the kayaks; it was amazing, we saw dolphins, turtle and whales. Then we had to say goodbye and it was kind of hard because it’s amazing how fast you can love someone when you are not at home, you just spend one weekend with them and you feel like if you were friends since a long time ago. I had so much fun in Big Island and I wish everyone could have the same experience that I'm having right now, you grow up, you realized how much you love all that you have in your country, and you get more out going. We are having another trip (Interact) and I am sure we'll have so much fun”.
Thanks go to the Rotary Clubs and Rotarians supporting this valuable program. Special mahalo to the Rotary Club of South Hilo and Rotarians Jim and Audrey Wilson for sharing their aloha by hosting our group for dinner.

Windward Sunrise Spreads Peace Through Puppets
Submitted by Gale Warshawsky, Rotary Club of Windward Oahu Sunrise
The Rotary Club of Windward Sunrise and the 3rd grade students of Maunawili Elementary School, in partnership with Peace Through Puppets, created 65 animal puppets that will be sent to U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq to give to the children that live there.
The Maunawili students will also write a "Hello" letter, from the puppet's point of view, to each of the puppets’ new friend. This literacy activity will reinforce letter writing with third grade students. It also allows these students who were the recipients of the Rotary Dictionaries and Atlas books, to participate in this Peace Through Puppets project and give back to the international community of children.
Peace Through Puppets is a non-profit organization that was established as a way for people to send puppets to U.S. soldiers in Iraq. The soldiers will give the puppets to children there. Much information is available about this wonderful project at the Peace Through Puppets Web Site at: http://www.peacethroughpuppets.com.
Gale Warshawsky is a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Puppeteers Guild (SFBAPG), a sponsor of Peace Through Puppets.

KUNG HEE FAT CHOY!!
submitted by AG MaryAnn Berry
Seventy Rotarians and guests representing the six Central Oahu Rotary Clubs welcomed the Chinese New Year at a gourmet feast on Saturday, February 9.
The celebration took place at the Royal Garden Restaurant where attendees enjoyed the delicious nine course meal which included the “good luck” dish of jai (or monk’s food) which was prepared differently with the jai served over roast duck. After about the fifth course, stomachs were getting full; but there were four more courses to come!
There were Rotarians and guests from the Rotary Clubs of Ala Moana, Diamond Head, Honolulu, Honolulu Sunset, Waikiki and West Honolulu. We also had a visiting Rotarian from Australia and his family, plus an Ambassadorial Scholar from Germany. Thanks to DG George for encouraging clubs to have a joint event strictly to socialize. Chinese New Year was perfect for the party.

HULA BOWL HELPS ROTARY RAISE FUNDS!
submitted by Elizabeth Reynolds, President, Honolulu Club
Saturday, January 12th was a day of fun, fellowship and excitement for Rotarians in District 5000. The Hula Bowl provided a final opportunity for University of Hawaii fans to watch some of their favorite players while enjoying some of the top players from Universities across the country.
Prior to the game, our Club hosted a tailgate party where our guests enjoyed delicious food and lots of fellowship courtesy of the Rotary Club of Honolulu and the Hula Bowl. To help beat the heat, Kona Brewing Company generously provided ice cold beer which disappeared quickly!
The smiles were abundant and the laughter was at a maximum. Our Club had the pleasure of hosting approximately 150 Rotarians, families and friends throughout the party and then we entered the stadium to enjoy the final live College game of the season. The game was enjoyable but nothing compared to the football exhibition by Kirk Matthews, Bill Brizee, and Bob Borek’s son!
This entire event was put together under the outstanding leadership of member Jesse James. He conjured up the idea and led us every step of the way. Tailgate gurus Kat McDivitt and Susan Doyle put together the best tailgate party at the game! Kat brought along chef extraordinaire, Peter, who showed us all what a real hamburger should taste like and Susan has forever been dubbed the “Bun Lady!”
Our Club’s John Warren Foundation realized a benefit of approximately $4000. In addition, several other Rotary Clubs and non-profits within our community participated and raised funds for their respective Clubs and organizations.
Mahalo to the entire committee for an outstanding job!

HONOLULU ROTARIANS RETURN TO THE PHILIPPINES
TO FOLLOW UP ON THEIR HUMANITARIAN MISSION
submitted by Elizabeth Reynolds, President, Honolulu Club
|
|
In July 2007, Don Anderson of the Rotary Club of Honolulu returned to Southern Leyte to attend the dedication ceremonies for the 20 homes that were built – all of which bear a plaque including the Rotary emblem and the Clubs who participated. The families had been selected and were involved in the finishing touches of their homes. It was a truly moving experience for Don and increased his passion to make a difference in the world. This year, the Rotary Club of Honolulu is returning to the Philippines in March to work on 2 projects. The first is construction of an agricultural training center which will be used for training rural youth in improving agricultural methods in the mountain areas above San Carlos on Negros island. Following that, volunteers will head to Cebu to to Medellin Central School. This is a very poor school in a rural area that serves 800 children. We will perform repairs and improvements as well as providing educational materials. We will again be partnering with other organizations and are privileged to again welcome the participation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset.
In addition, we provided Club funding to secure two matching grants to bring information technology and computer literacy to the out-of-school youth in Basilan and Jolo in the Southern Philippines. Both Basilan and Jolo are ranked among the poorest of provinces in the Philippines with over 60% of the residents not having the means to meet the most basic food and non-food needs. In addition, the two areas have been plagued with unrest and combat between the Philippines military, on the one hand, and the MNLF, MILF and Abu Sayef, on the other. We have identified reliable local NGOs in both locations that have agreed to set up the equipment and manage the computer training.
