Message from Governor George
Aloha Everyone!
Paige and I have completed 14 club visits as of July 27th, and both us of are truly amazed at the level of commitment and dedication of Hawaii Rotarians we have witnessed at every club we have visited. In addition, every club has demonstrated true aloha spirit in welcoming us and making us feel part of their Rotary family. We are really looking forward to visiting the remaining clubs.
We are off to a terrific start this year! During my visits I have personally inducted twelve new members - one of them I personally sponsored. Several presidents have stepped up to my challenge to lead by example and personally sponsor a new member to their club. Fantastic! Our Rotary family has already grown by over 20 members in the last two weeks. If this trend continues, our clubs will easily meet my suggested goal of 10% net increase in membership. Thanks to all of you that have made the commitment to grow our Rotary family this year!
I am also happy to report the continued commitment of Hawaii Rotarians to the RI Foundation. During my visits, I was constantly reminded of the incredible financial contributions the Rotarians in Hawaii are making. Your financial contributions allow Rotary to continue the great humanitarian projects we do worldwide and to continue our efforts to promote world peace. On behalf of Rotary International and the RI Foundation, thank you!
Let's continue to rock the Rock and show the world how Rotary in Hawaii SHARES. The district team is here to support you in your goals and dreams! Please let me know how we can assist you in rocking the Rock!
~ DG George

MEMBERSHIP
To recognize and reward the MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN A ROTARIAN'S LIFE - THE SPONSOR, we have developed the 1 For 1 MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE. This program provides an alternative strategy to expand Rotary. It simply asks each Rotarian to bring in ONE new member during next year (July 1st to June 30th). As an incentive, the winning new member and sponsor will win a trip to the District Conference in Wailea on Maui. The prize includes round trip airfare and the District Conference registration fee. Read on for more info and the submission form....
New Member Proposal Form are also available on the Member Area Section of the District Website.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Thanks to you ...
"Rotary District 5000 Back to School" School Supplies Drive
Continues to be a HUGE SUCCESS!

District Community Service Chair Sonya Mendez happily accepted donations from Michelle and Lee-Jay from R. Baird Company in Honolulu. This was the second year in a row that the distribution company, located on Sand Island Road, donated over 6000 pens, pencils, stickets and magnets to the Rotary's school supplies drive.

The Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise and Maui Community College Rotoract collected 31 boxes of school supplies, approximately 60 rolls of paper towels, and an amazing $1,651.67 in cash. See more pictures here.
School Supplies Drive Schedule:
Friday, Aug. 3 and Saturday, Aug. 4, the Maui Rotary Club will be at Office Max in Kahului from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On Saturday, Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the East Honolulu Rotary Club will be at Macy's in Kahala Mall.
Help Hawaii's underprivileged youth by donating school supplies.

LITERACY

Hawaii Rotary Dictionary Project
Just a reminder to place your dictionary orders soon. Dictionaries are shipped via Parcel Post and it may take up to 4 weeks to receive and in some cases to the neighbor islands it has taken longer.
If you are targeting for a September dictionary distribution/presentation, your orders should be into me by August 1.
Also, I will be away from August 16 through September 18. And will not be able to place any dictionary orders for you during that time.
If you have any questions, please contact me and I will assist you.
A MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT SECRETARY
Dick Starkweather
I would like to welcome the District Club Presidents and Secretaries to the Rotary International year of 2007-2008.
By now, each Club Secretary should have received the SAR from Rotary International and each Club President should have signed the SAR for mailing to Rotary International, with a payment for dues payable. The SAR is to provide information to Rotary International of an accounting of District club members for the period ending 30 June 2007. Each club has the option of paying membership dues to RI annually or /biannually, based on the membership count for the year ending 30 June 2007. Presidents and Secretaries should have verified what members are leaving Rotary prior to 1 June 2007 and made the corrections on the Rotary International Membership web site.
Each Club is required to make a contribution to District 5000 and Rotary International for membership, equal to what your Club declared to Rotary International as active members. District 5000 Club membership dues are due for the same number of RI members (based on the SAR report your club received) no later than 31 July 2007.
Dues for each District 5000 club member are $54.00 annually. After paying the RI dues, each club has the option of paying District 5000 dues annually at a rate of $54.00 per member (due on 31 July 2007), or semi-annually at a rate of $27.00 per member (due 31 July 2007 and 1 January 2008). If your club dues have not been paid, they are due now. Additionally, as the year progresses, each new inducted member dues should be prorated for the period as the year progresses and payment must be mailed to RI and District 5000.
Good luck in your year. If you have questions, please contact me at starkwear001@Hawaii.rr.com.

Celebrating the beautiful life of
Liz Janes-Brown
July 11, 1941 - July 23, 2007
beloved wife of
Rotarian Paul Janes-Brown,
Rotary Club of Maui
She was a teacher. A singer. A dancer. An actress. A radio personality. A print journalist. A columnist and editor. A music critic. An emcee and impresario. A wife and mother. And in her final years, a tireless and courageous advocate for cancer sufferers.
She died Monday morning at home in Kokomo. Her husband, Paul Janes-Brown, and daughter Juliet were at her side when she lost a nine-year battle with cancer.
