ROTARY BACK TO SCHOOL

AN OUTRAGEOUS SUCCESS!

submitted by Sonya Mendez, D5000 Community Serivces Chair

“It was the most outrageously successful community service project in this club’s history!” exclaimed Hawaii Kai Rotary Club president Dave Mueh.

The small club, with less than 20 members, collected 1,000 pounds of school supplies in just six hours as part of the Rotary District 5000 Back to School Supplies Drive in July.

The inaugural district-wide event, a Community Service and Literacy Project, was eagerly kicked off with a joint club effort by the Rotary Clubs of Kihei Sunrise and Kihei-Wailea  on Saturday, July 21. With the help of the Rotaract Club of Maui Community College, shoppers in the area donated over $2000 in cash, and over 30 boxes of much needed supplies for Kamali’i and Kihei Elementary schools and other organizations. Larry Laird, president of the Kihei Sunrise Rotary Club, reported an impressive 84% membership participation and encouraged other Valley Isle clubs to participate next year.

Providing Optics Materials to SchoolsThrough

Teacher-Student Training Program at `Imiloa Center

Hands-On Optics (HOO) is a workshop program targeted at middle-school teachers and students that is provided by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), and offered at the `Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai`i. Materials supplied by Phase I of the program consist of three modules, each containing 8-12 fun and engaging activities with: (1) lasers and mirrors, (2) kaleidoscopes, (3) telescopes and lenses.

Shown here are (left to right)St. Joseph science teacher Michael Kingston, RCHB Grants Chair Paula Uusitalo, RCHB President and `Imiloa Astronomer-in-Residence Richard Crowe, Nawahi science teacher Loke Roseguo, and `Imiloa Education Program Manager Janet Babb. Photo is by Vincent Recinto.

The goals of the HOO program are:

  • to create links between optics professionals and educators;
  • to reach under-served middle-school students in science and technology;
  • to engage students in collaborative learning and problem-solving activities;
  • to increase science and technology and awareness of optics.

`Imiloa has two complete kits for the workshops, but through a Rotary Foundation District 5000 Simplified Grant of $2,464 for the year 2006-2007, the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay (RCHB) was able to acquire for the Center two additional kits containing all the equipment and supplies needed to teach the HOO activities.  These two new kits will be provided to workshop participants for use in their own schools, one to St. Joseph School in Hilo, and the other to Nawahiokalani`opu`u in Keaukaha.
