ROTARY PEACEMAKER COMMITTEE

The mission of the ROTARY Peacemaker Committee is to develop "Peace through Understanding" throughout Rotary and throughout the world.  We believe that our mission can best be accomplished by instilling peace within ourselves; our families; and our community.

As peacekeepers we are guided by the core values of fairness, justice, compassion, forgiveness and respect for the dignity of others, as well as by the virtues of humility and courage.

How to establish a PEACEMAKER COMMITTEE (document)

The two main objectives of the Rotary Peacemaker Committee are to present the Jerry Chang Peacemaker Award to a worthy District 5000 Rotarian on an annual basis and to conduct an annual Peacemaker Video Contest throughout Hawaii's Schools.

Peacemaker Video Contest - Each year the Peacemaker Committee sponsors a video contest for elementary, intermediate and high school students based on the idea of creating peace in our world.  Our goal is for students to have fun in applying their creativity to any topic about creating peace such as:  Sports; Road Rage; Bullying; Divorce and Domestic Violence; Racism; Genocide; or any other area where creating peace could make a positive difference in the world.

The videos can be can be 3 to 5 minutes long or they can be a Public Service Announcement which would be between 15 and 25 seconds long.  Winners of the contest are awarded Sony Cameras for their school as well as $200 for the 1st place winner in each school division. There is an additional $100 for an overall honorable mention winner and a Peace Book for every school participating in this category.

Winners also get to participate in an Olelo produced 30-minute television show that will be aired on a regular basis following the video competition.  To view the 30-minute television show for this year's winners please CLICK HERE.

The winning teams are also invited to attend a Rotary Club of Honolulu luncheon where they will receive their cash awards and be recognized for their efforts. This year's winning videos can be seen here.

The Rotary Peacemaker Committee works in partnership with Olelo and their Youth Xchange Video Competition.  For more information on the contest, to see previous winning videos or to learn how you can enter next year's contest please visit www.olelo.org/yxc

Jerry Chang Peacemaker Award - This award is given annually to a Rotary Club District 5000 committee, group or individual member who exhibits modesty, compassion and persistence in providing leadership in the area of peacemaking to our island community or the world at large. It is named after Jerry Chang, a District 5000 Rotarian who founded the Peacemaker Committee before his untimely death in 2003.

Peacemaking may include, but not be limited to, a wide field of work such as:

  • humanitarian efforts
  • involvement in peace movements
  • advocacy of human rights
  • outstanding community service achievements
  • mediation of conflicts

We would like your help in nominating this year's Jerry Chang Award recipient. Please take a few minutes to think of a Rotarian in District 5000 who may be worthy of this prestigious award. Past recipients include: Don Anderson, Paddy Griggs, Rob Hail, Samir El-Swaify, Tracey Wiltgen, Stanly Togikawa and Jake Jacobs.

Click here for the nomination form.

Please return your completed nomination form to Tom Matthews at tom1@leis.net. You can also contact him at 808-387-9625 should you have any questions regarding the nomination process.

Also, we are asking that each District 5000 Club consider the establishment of their own Peacemaker Committee. The Rotary Peacemaker Committee would be happy to assist you in anyway that we can. For more information on how you can help spread the message of peace throughout your community and the world please contact Rotary Peacemaker Committee Chairperson, Jesse James at jesse@jessejamesseminars.com or call him at 591-1136.

We hope that you will join us in promoting the idea of peace through understanding and joining in the fun by becoming a member of your own club's Peacemaker Committee.
