One year after the first service project, the Rotary Club of Hickam Pearl Harbor returns to Kaka'ako Waterfront Park and the Ehime Maru Memorial.
With a total of 35 volunteers, as compared to the 19 from the previous year, the Rotary Club of Hickam Pearl Harbor joined Rotarians and friends from the Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor, Eco Rotary Club of Kaka'ako, and the Rotary Club of Ala Moana at the Kaka'ako Waterfront Park, which was again relatively clean, for a park cleanup service project. There was a sizeable amount of trash that the volunteers found.
Another part of the service project was to visit the Ehime Maru Memorial, learn about the history, and clean it up. The memorial, likewise, was immaculate possibly due to the lack of Japanese tourists that generally come to visit the memorial.

After the brief history and cleanup of the memorial, Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor's, LTC Steve Dyer (ret) provided additional historic details that followed the tragic accident and his experience with the aftermath. There was also a volunteer at this year's service project who was a submariner who provided insights as to the minuscule chance of two vessels colliding on that day. It was evident, that Rotarian Dyer truly avoided an international incident with his knowledge of Japanese customs and protocols that helped mitigate a possible International incident.

At the end of the morning service project, volunteers left with a better understanding of what happened and enjoyed each other's company, and felt good about doing good for the community.
