Aloha District 5000 Rotarians!
I hope you are enjoying the May weather and sunshine!  Congratulations to all of the Clubs for upholding the Rotary Ideals and motto of Service Above Self. You are all winners!  As with graduation, we have Valedictorians and the Clubs of the Year are:

Small Club –  Eco Rotary Club of Kaka’ako, President Pili Valerrama
Medium Club – Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui, President Wendy Hornack
Large Club – Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, President Vanessa Moreno

Congratulations to Dr. Paul Moroz, Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset, for being recognized with a Service Above Self award from Rotary International, a prestigious award given to only 150 worldwide!

I want to take this opportunity to thank the hardworking District Conference committee, lead by Alan Kusunoki.  We have had many comments that the speakers and information was well received.  We used a conference app with had a lot of features that Rotarians had fun with.  The Whova conference app will remain open until the end of July and maybe long if there still is a lot of activity.  If you would like to join the conversations, view the House of Friendship, we are able to add a limited amount of people to the app. For free registration to get the link to Whova, CLICK HERE

Apparently there was a Whova Leaderboard competition that we didn’t know about, so here are the results:
1st place – Kecia King with 177,400 points
2nd place – Keith Greer with 161,900 points
3rd place -  Wally Wong with 83,400 points

Holy cow, there are 1,859 messages, 684 photos, 85 Community Board posts. You had a lot of fun with the Community board!  There were over 400 postings about all kinds of topics like: Book clubs, Quilters, Club Zoom links, Future Rotary Presidents, Pet Parents, Fight Human Trafficking, Music, Sustainable Farming, Homeless in Hawaii, Membership, Youth Exchange, For the Love of Cheese!, Oahu Pride, Speakers, Rotary has changed my life by…, Aha moments, Peace Initiatives, Zoom Games, Whiskey Lovers, Ulu a Sustainable Fruit, Job Openings and much more.  Article Sharing had 55 posts, followed by Pet Parents at 47 and Share Your Moments at 43.  Check it out!

We will post the recordings of the keynote speakers to the Webinar Recordings page on the District website, along with the Silent Movie that was hilarious. Thanks Nancy and Marcia for making us laugh!  Gee, Randy Hart never ages!   Here’s a link to the conference program: (correction on the Hall of Fame, Tommy Gee joined in 1957)

If you missed the Rotary tabloid in the paper last week Sunday that included a short blurb from each club, in the conference program we have the “outtakes”.  We only had room for about 40 words in the tabloid, so I am sharing with you the rest of the story in the program to get a little flavor of each club.  We are Rotary Strong!

Here are comments from the Club of the Year Presidents:
Eco Rotary President Pili Valderrama says, “The Eco Rotary Club is overjoyed and truly honored to receive this award. The things we achieved this year were only possible because of the collaboration and support of clubs across the District.  Thanks very much to everyone who supported us throughout the year and we hope to continue making an impact in 2021/22.

Upcountry Maui President Wendy Hornack says, “I am honored and so excited that the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui won the Medium Club of the Year.  My club members work year around on service projects and fundraisers for the community.  They constantly support local non-profits and truly show the meaning of service above self.  They’re humbleness would never ask for recognition and that’s why I am even more proud for them.  My club members are my rotary ohana and my children and I would not be where we are without them.  I am so thankful to be a part of such an amazing team and completely honored to lead them. Mahalo to all my fellow Rotarians for this privilege.”

Lahaina Sunset President Vanessa Moreno says, “What an amazing honor that The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset be awarded Large Club of the Year! As the smallest club in our category, this accomplishment could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of all our members. Year-round, we strive to provide opportunities and build everlasting relationships within our community to make a difference the Rotary way. We humbly accept this award and look forward to many more years of service.”
