Several mornings each week, Rotarian David Hurd from the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay heads off to Hilo Union Elementary School cafeteria. Working in conjunction with Mrs. Esther Kottke, the school Reading Curriculum Specialist, he reads for about half an hour while some of the school children are having breakfast.

It's a very informal setting with some children listening intently and others happily chatting away with their friends. Some children sit just a few feet away so that it's easier for them to see the book pictures that Hurd shows them during the reading of each book. In the picture above, Hurd is reading "Cat in the Hat" during a Dr. Suess book reading week.

Hurd and Kottke work together to have a wide variety of subject matter for the children to listen to including books on science and nature to complement stories about growing up and making friends.

If you're retired or don't have to be at the office first thing in the morning, this is a great way to begin your day...
