Each year the Rotary clubs in District 5000 are invited to propose candidates for District Governor. 

The nomination period for the District Governor for 2026-2027 is now open. Those who are ready, willing and qualified are invited to apply.

Applicants are to complete and submit the application forms (the D5000 Application Form, Article 16 Acknowledgement and the RI Governor-nominee Designate Form signed by the Club Secretary) not later than 12:00 midnight (HST) on October 9, 2023.

In-person interviews will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, beginning at 9:00 a.m. (HST) at the law offices of Case Lombardi A Law Corporation, Pacific Guardian Center, Mauka Tower, 737 Bishop Street, Suite 2600, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813.  Applicants will be assigned specific interview times after October 9, 2023.

Qualifications of a District Governor

At the time of selection (subject to a 15-day challenge period), the nominee will become the district governor nominee-designate (DNGD).  On July 1, 2024, the DGND will become the district governor nominee (DGN).  On July 1, 2025, the DGN will become the district governor-elect (DGE).  On July 1, 2026, the DGE will become the district governor for one year.

At the time of selection, the nominee must:

  • Be a member in good standing of a functioning club in District 5000 (RI Bylaws § 16.010(a));
  • Have served as club president for a full term or as charter president for at least six months (RI Bylaws § 16.010(b)) ;
  • Demonstrate willingness, commitment, and ability to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a governor in section 16.030;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the qualifications, duties, and responsibilities of governor as prescribed in the bylaws; and
  • Submit to RI a statement that the Rotarian understands those qualifications, duties, and responsibilities, is qualified for the office of governor, and is willing and able to assume and faithfully perform those duties and responsibilities.

At the time of taking office on July 1, 2026, the nominee must have attended the International Assembly for its full duration, have been a Rotarian for at least seven years and continue to possess all of the qualifications mentioned above (RI Bylaws § 16.020)

Duties of the District Governor

The governor is the officer of RI in the district, functioning under the general control and supervision of the board. The governor shall inspire and motivate the clubs in the district. The governor shall ensure continuity within the district by working with past, current, and incoming district leaders. The district governor’s responsibilities can be found in the RI Learning Center at learn.rotary.org (District Governor Basics, Intermediate and Advance). In addition to fulfilling the duties and responsibilities mentioned above, the district governor is expected to adhere to the Rotary Code of Ethics and the District Policy Manual.
